Noah Movie Review
Noah stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, Logan Lerman, and Douglas Booth.
Noah is about Russell Crowe, who is Noah and receives a message from God telling him that he is going to end the world by a giant flood. That is essentially the main plot of the story and then looking back it is the only plot that is actually advertised and shown in trailers and on plot synopsis'. However, that "main" central plot is resolved a little more than halfway and then the sub-plot kicks in, and unfortunately the movie takes a turn for the worse.
Before i get to the negatives of the movies, and there are a few, i wanna talk about the positives. First off, the no doubt best part of the movie is the amazing performances by nearly every single actor in the movie, Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins especially gave stand out performances. There was not a single moment of over acting and the emotion in the movie felt real and genuine, even those these actors where portraying "fictional" people. Another positive aspect of the movie is the effects. At times, the animals didn't look the best but for the majority of the movie the effects were top notch. There was also an aspect of this movie, which i won't spoil, was handled very well when it could have been extremely over dramatic.
Now to the negatives of the film. First off, i actually despised the first 30 minutes of the movie. I started to get into the film once the arc was being built but until then, i was bothered by the editing of the movie. By that i mean that the first 30 minutes of the movie seem to have no flow and is just a montage of scenes put together to introduce the characters and get the plot in motion. Now, the part i was talking about not advertised in trailers would be the aspect of the Watchers. The Watchers were fallen angels and in the movie, they are giant rock monsters. I was extremely annoyed with this aspect of the movie, until it was shown the reason for them being in the movie. However though, i thought it was a rather poor excuse to help Noah get out of a situation. Also, the Watchers effects at times looked like bad stop-motion animation and that definitely took me out of the movie. Also, for a PG-13 movie, there was some EXTREME violence in the movie, and i was really taken off guard by this. The over violence in the movie was not a one scene thing, but it was rather watching a girl get trampled, people ripping limps and tearing apart a pig, and the over bloody violence in the movie. I usually love violence in movies, when it is done right, and the over violent scenes in the movie did not fit with the tone and issues this movie was trying to show. My final negative with the movie, and this is a small once is towards the end of the movie , there is a 2 minute montage scene of the earth evolving which was poorly done, in my opinion.
Overall, Noah is a decent time at the movies and is sure to please movie goers around. I however was bothered by a good portion of the movie. I would have given Noah a C, if it were not for a rather well done ending, really amazing performances, and decent special effects.
Noah: B-
